Infertility affects up to 200 million people globally and is the 5th greatest burden of disease in reproductive age. It affects both women and men and people of all genders and races on all continents. The impact of infertility is especially challenging in LMIC. There is increasing recognition by the World Health Organization, professional societies, the public, and policy makers of the importance of infertility as a personal, medical, and public health problem.

Pre-Congress Workshop 3: The Role of Human Factors in Reducing Unintentional Medical Errors

Time: 2:00 pm London time (UTC+1)
Duration: 3 hours
Cost: USD 25
Organized by: Haemorrhage after Childbirth Foundation

This is an interactive 3-hour virtual session facilitated by four certified clinicians (three obstetricians and gynaecologists and one primary care physician) with experience in delivering HF training in the UK, the Middle East, Tanzania and China. The faculty has also collaborated with aviation experts from British Airways Flight Training in developing an innovative clinical Human Factors (non-technical skills) course using real time haptic flight simulators to demonstrate Human Factors skills to clinicians. It is now recognised that at least 70% of avoidable medical errors are related to poor awareness of Human Factors and the faculty is passionate about integrating these skills into day-to-day clinical practice, using routine examples (such as misinterpreting CTGs and retained swabs) to highlight this. The facilitators will use Teams or Zoom to deliver the interactive session and will encourage delegates to ask questions, participate and share their experiences. The facilitators use the Chatham House rule which anonymises cases, thus providing psychologically safe space to discuss the events and allow learning. Attendees will learn how to:

  • Maintain situational awareness and not lose the “helicopter view”
  • Develop a shallow authority gradient working environment (tools to enable junior trainees to speak up)
  • Develop a vigilant “checking” discipline and use of practical checklists
  • Manage and reduce distractions in clinical practice
  • Make decisions and avoid bias The workshop shows how a broad understanding of Human Factors help clinicians appreciate their limitations and provides tips on how to avoid, trap and mitigate potential errors.

Duration: 4 hours
Cost: USD 25
Organized by: World Health Organization (WHO) and Johns Hopkins Program for International Education in Gynecology and Obstetrics (JHPIEGO)

Violence against women and its consequences for the health of women including sexual and reproductive health are being increasingly recognized by the health community. In the context of COVID-19, there has been an alarming increase in reports of intimate partner violence. However, there is limited progress in the capacity of health care providers to respond to such violence. Women subjected to violence don't always explicitly disclose violence. Instead, many are more likely to seek health care, particularly from sexual and reproductive health services for health conditions linked to violence. Therefore, it is important to train health providers to identify women subjected to violence and provide survivor-centred clinical care. WHO has published guidelines and training curricula for health care providers on how to respond to women subjected to violence. These are being rolled out in several countries, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Namibia.

This session will introduce participants to basic knowledge and skills about survivor-centred clinical care including first-line support/psychological support in response to disclosure of violence. It will draw on good practices from clinical settings in low and high-income settings including Australia on how to identify women, how to provide an empathetic response, address their practical and emotional needs, and how to help them access referrals. The sessions will be a mix of presentations, videos, and participatory exercises including role plays. It will also involve sharing of practicallessons from clinicians who have implemented the WHO guidelines and training.

3–5% of babies are breech in presentation in term. Most babies in the breech position are delivered via caesarean section because it is seen as safer than being born vaginally. Doctors and midwives in the developing world often lack skills required to safely assist a vaginal breech delivery. In Australia only 11% of trainees have reported to have an intention to offer planned vaginal breech delivery at term when they become specialists. This interactive workshop will provide information and knowledge from worldwide known clinicians that will help you gain skills to perform breech deliveries. Additionally, trainers will be able to comment simultaneously on performing skills to trainees that will attend workshops on occasions which will be taking place worldwide.
